I read a fair amount of romance novels, but never blog about them, because they’re my escapist brain candy. But I read one recently that made me think, so I thought I’d share.

Their Four Date Experiment: An Opposites Attract MM Romance by Jeff Adams and William Gayheart is about the creator of a popular online dating app, and a critic who thinks such apps undermine the process of meeting romantic partners and falling in love. It’s a romance, so the protagonists fall in love and live happily ever after. But the meat of the book is an ongoing debate about the philosophy and ethics of online dating apps — how they’re produced, the biases inherent in the algorithms, and whether they allow for human connection. The characters are passionate about their opposing viewpoints, and it’s far more cerebral than your average romance. Hell, more so than your average novel in any genre, except maybe the more intellectual side of speculative fiction.
It’s not a perfect book, but it’s a really interesting one. I enjoyed it a lot.
